Qualification profile of CME graduates
Graduates of the Master’s program in Communications and Multimedia Engineering gain advanced expertise in signal processing, communications, and multimedia technologies, built on a strong foundation in engineering mathematics, systems, and signal theory. The Master’s program combines scientific depth with practical relevance and prepares students for independent research and high-level engineering roles.
Students learn to design, implement, and analyse modern communication and multimedia systems, both theoretically and experimentally. Through application-oriented courses and research projects, they engage with current technologies and develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Graduates of the Master’s program in Communications and Multimedia Engineering are able to independently solve complex engineering challenges using advanced methods. Having studied in an international environment, they have strengthened their intercultural competence and advanced their English proficiency.
The Master’s program generally qualifies students for roles in the communications and multimedia industries and all related fields that use information technologies.

Typical fields of work
- Research and development (e.g., research engineer at universities, Fraunhofer institutes, large research institutions or R&D departments of companies)
- Telecommunications and networks (e.g., development and optimization of radio and data networks such as 5G/6G, fiber optic components, network planning, system integration, and protocol development)
- Multimedia and media technology (e.g., development of audio, video, and image processing systems, streaming technologies, augmented/virtual reality, metaverse applications)
- Embedded systems and automation (e.g., integration of communication and multimedia technologies into embedded systems used in automotive or medical technologies)
- Software and system development (e.g., positions in the field of signal processing and communication system software)
- Project and product management (e.g., project management, technical product planning, or technical consulting in a high-tech environment especially in companies with complex communications and multimedia systems)

German language skills: Your career booster
German is the only official language in Germany. While knowledge of the German language is not mandatory to work as an engineer in Germany, job openings for applicants with no or little German skills are limited. Most companies ask for at least B2 level German skills.
In order to prepare our international students for a career in Germany, the Master’s degree program in Communications and Multimedia Engineering integrates German language courses in the curriculum.
FAU Career Service
The Career Service is part of the Student Advice Center at FAU. The Career Service provides advice to students about working while studying, starting and planning a career. The service is also available to FAU graduates up to one year after graduation.
The Career Service offers:
- Workshops and events on job applications and career entry
- Practical videos on applying for a job in Germany
- Individual career counseling and guidance
- Information for international students on working during your studies
- Dedicated resources for international students on building a career in Germany via the International Student Servicepoint (ISS) on StudOn.
